About SimplePaperwork

Last updated

SimplePaperwork explains everyday US paperwork — changing your name after marriage and common legal forms — state by state, with the official rule, the source and the date for every fact, plus ready-to-fill kits. SimplePaperwork is not a law firm and does not give legal advice.

What we do

SimplePaperwork covers two kinds of paperwork. The first is changing your name after marriage: the order of the steps, from the marriage record to Social Security, the driver license, the passport and the voter roll, with each state’s deadline and fee. The second is everyday legal forms, such as a vehicle bill of sale or a residential lease, with each state’s signing rules.

The guides are free to read. The paid products fill documents in from your answers: a name change kit for $34.95 per state and a legal form for $9.95.

How we check

Every rule we publish comes from an official page: a federal or state agency (Social Security, a motor vehicle office, a vital records office), a state legislature’s statutes, or an agency’s own form. Blogs, forums and other paperwork sites are never a source. Research is assisted by software, and every fact is checked against the official page before it is published.

  • Each fact shows the page it comes from and the date we read it, as a numbered note.
  • Each topic has a review period. Motor vehicle office deadlines and fees are re-checked every 90 days, marriage record rules every 120 days, Social Security rules every 180 days, deadlines and fees for legal forms every 180 days and their signing rules every 365 days.
  • A fact that passes its review date without a new check is removed from the page automatically.
  • A state page is published only when enough of its facts are checked. If a rule is not written on an official page, the box stays empty: we never fill it in from memory.

What SimplePaperwork is not

  • SimplePaperwork is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. No attorney-client relationship is created by using the site.
  • SimplePaperwork is not a government agency and is not affiliated with one.
  • SimplePaperwork does not file documents for anyone or represent anyone before a court or agency.
  • Government forms are free on each agency’s website. You pay for the preparation, never for the form.

How SimplePaperwork makes money

Only from the kits and forms people buy, as one-time payments processed by Stripe. Payments never decide which facts appear about a state, and no agency or company pays to be mentioned.
