The order matters
Most delays come from doing things out of order. Social Security comes before the motor vehicle office, because the other agencies check your new name against it.
County clerk or state vital records
Certified copy of the marriage record
Order it first. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the issuing office, never photocopies.1
Your state motor vehicle office
Driver’s license or state ID
Each state sets its own deadline, fee and documents. Your state page has them, with the source for each.
Your state election office
Voter registration
Update it online through vote.gov or by mail with the National Mail Voter Registration Form.97
Payroll, accounts, insurance
Employer, bank and everyone else
Tell your employer for payroll: every name on a tax return must match Social Security records.97
Name change kit · $34.95
What’s in the kit
You answer a few questions once. The kit fills in the federal forms, puts your state’s steps in order with every deadline and fee, and drafts the letters for everyone else.
You sign and hand everything in yourself; nothing is filed in your name.
SimplePaperwork is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. We explain public forms and official steps, and you decide what to sign and file.
