Name change court filing fee by state

As of November 3, 2026, the court fee for an adult name change petition ranges from $20 plus local fees in Virginia to $435 in California ($450 in two counties), and in Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other states it is set county by county. A name change by marriage usually does not go to court: Social Security and the license office take the marriage certificate, and that is what the SimplePaperwork kit fills in.

What the court fee does not cover
The filing fee is only the court’s part: North Carolina, for example, adds $30 for each item the sheriff serves, and after the order you still update Social Security, the license office and your passport. New York’s court system says you can ask for a fee waiver if you cannot pay. For a name change by marriage, the name change kit ($34.95) fills in the federal forms and lists your state’s steps.
