Month-to-month termination notice by state

Last updated

As of October 27, 2026, SimplePaperwork has the month-to-month notice rule for 12 states from each state’s law or housing agency: 30 days is the most common, North Carolina’s statute says 7 days and Washington’s 20 days for a tenant, and New York and California add more time once a tenant has stayed longer. Pick your state below; a state marked “Not covered yet” is one we have not checked.

What a free template does not cover

The law sets the minimum notice, and some states and cities add rules on top: California and New York City require a reason in many cases, and Illinois and Michigan courts publish free official forms, which is why we do not sell our notice there. Where we do sell it, the notice is filled in from your answers with that state’s rule and the date the tenancy ends. One state-specific document, filled in and ready to sign, with free edits from your order link.
