Questions about Alabama
Where do you get a certified Alabama marriage certificate?
From the Center for Health Statistics of the Alabama Department of Public Health, which holds marriages from August 1936 on. The $15 search fee includes one certified copy; more copies ordered at the same time are $6 each, and rushing the order adds $15.
You can order by mail, through VitalChek online or by phone, or walk into any county health department in the state, where most copies print while you wait. Alabama marriage records are unrestricted, so no proof of relationship is needed.4
Why is there no marriage license in Alabama anymore?
A 2019 law ended marriage licenses. Couples now sign and notarize the Alabama Marriage Certificate form and deliver it to any probate court for recording; the court then forwards the original to the Center for Health Statistics.
Some probate courts give the couple a certified copy at recording and some do not. Once the state has filed the record, copies come from the Center for Health Statistics or a county health department.7
How do you change your name on an Alabama driver license?
Change it with Social Security first. ALEA then issues a duplicate license with the new name at a probate or licensing office or an ALEA Driver License Office, and asks for the marriage certificate plus proof of the Social Security update.
Form DL-100 lists the duplicate fee at $31.25 for any class. Residents who cannot reach an office, or who are out of state for a listed reason, can mail that form with photocopies of the name papers and the updated card, paid by money order or cashier’s check.1,2
How do you update your name on an Alabama voter registration?
Use the state’s voter application, which works for updates as well as new registrations. Online, it needs a valid Alabama license or non-driver ID; on paper (Form NVRA-2), write your former name and mail it to your county Board of Registrars.
Updates stop during the 14 days before each election, and nothing changes until the county board approves the application.8–10
