Questions about Arkansas

How much is a certified Arkansas marriage record?

The Arkansas Department of Health charges $10.00 a copy. Ordering online through Vital Records adds a $5.00 processing fee and a $1.85 identity check; if no record turns up, $10.00 is kept as a search fee.

Online orders typically take 7 to 14 business days after approval plus shipping, and mailed orders 10 to 14 days plus mail time. At the Little Rock office on West Markham Street, most eligible walk-ins who arrive by 4:00 p.m. leave with the copy the same day.4

What do you bring to an Arkansas revenue office to change your name?

Your name change documents, such as the marriage record. The DFA says a renewal needs nothing else unless the name changed or you want a REAL ID, and you should expect a vision exam and a new photo.

If a document linking two of your names is missing, the Office of Driver Services has an Affidavit of Legal Name Change that lists each marriage and divorce, the name on your Social Security card and the name you want on the license.1–3

How do you update your name on an Arkansas voter registration?

Complete the name change section of the state’s paper voter application, available from county clerks, revenue and DMV offices, libraries or the Secretary of State. The Secretary of State says this prevents a second registration under the maiden name.

Turn it in at least 30 days before the election you want it to count for; a mailed form counts by its postmark. The county clerk then mails a new voter card, which can take several weeks.7,8

What the Arkansas kit does, and what it doesn’t

  • Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
  • The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
  • The Arkansas checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
  • Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.

The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.
