Questions about Indiana
Where do you get a certified copy of an Indiana marriage license?
From the Clerk of Court in the county that issued the license. The Indiana Department of Health refers certified-copy requests to the county; it handles its own Record of Marriage copies through State Form 54764.
Not sure which county? The department suggests the Indiana Courts’ Marriage License Public Lookup and the Indiana State Library’s marriage databases.3
How long do you have to update an Indiana license after marriage?
Thirty days. The BMV says a driver whose name changes must visit a branch within that window to apply for an updated license or ID card, and the transaction is not offered online.
Go to Social Security first and give it at least one business day: the name and date of birth on your documents have to match Social Security records when you reach the branch.1
What should you bring to the Indiana BMV for a name change?
Your marriage license, as the original or a certified copy from the issuing agency; the BMV turns away plain copies. A divorce decree, a court order or an amended birth certificate also count as name change documents.
Expect a new photo: any change to what is printed on an Indiana license or ID requires one.1
How do you change your name on an Indiana voter registration?
Update the record online at indianavoters.in.gov with your Indiana license or state ID, or apply at the BMV branch during the license visit. A county acknowledgment should arrive within about 30 days.
An absentee ballot application works too: marking the new name on it updates the record, and counties may process that change even while registration is closed.5,6
What the Indiana kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Indiana checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.

Can you update your Indiana voter name while registration is closed?
