Questions about South Dakota
Where can you get a certified South Dakota marriage certificate?
At the Department of Health office in Pierre or any county Register of Deeds, in person or by mail, for $15 a copy. VitalChek handles phone and online orders, which total $26.50 with regular mail.
A mailed application must be notarized or include a clear copy of a photo ID. The fee is not refunded if no record is found. Tribal marriages are the exception: the copy comes from the tribe.4,6
Can you change your name on a South Dakota license online or by mail?
No. The online and mail-in duplicate options are for other changes; a new surname has to be handled in person at a driver licensing location. Walk-ins are welcome, and appointments are available.
Bring an original certified marriage certificate issued by a government entity, since church certificates and photocopies are refused, plus two documents with your name and physical address and an application signed by hand. Each earlier name change needs its own certified document.1,3
What is the South Dakota fee for a name change on a license?
Twenty dollars. Section 32-12-16 of the Codified Laws charges that amount for a name change, the same as for a duplicate license or an address change.2
How do you change your name on a South Dakota voter registration?
Fill out the state’s voter registration form, which also covers name changes, sign it and get it to your county auditor. Fax and email are not allowed.
To count for an election, the signed form must reach the auditor 15 days before it. A driver’s license station can also take your registration on the license application.8

- The South Dakota checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.

Frequently asked questions
Does a South Dakota church wedding certificate work at the driver exam station?
No. The Department of Public Safety wants a certified marriage certificate issued by a government entity, not one from the church, and it accepts only original certified documents.3
Do you have to go back to the county where you married for a South Dakota certificate?
No. The Department of Health takes orders at its Pierre office or at any Register of Deeds in the state, in person or by mail, and through VitalChek online or by phone.6
Can you email a South Dakota voter registration change?
No. South Dakota law does not allow the voter registration form to be sent by fax or email; it must reach the county auditor with an original signature.8
Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?
No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.7,10
Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?
Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.12
Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?
No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.5
