Social Security
  • The Social Security Administration recommends updating your Social Security record before you go to your state motor vehicle office.2
  • Social Security suggests waiting until the state has recorded the marriage, which takes about 30 days in most cases.2

  • Social Security treats a marriage certificate as the ideal proof of both the new legal name and the marriage.2
  • Social Security accepts only original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency, never photocopies or notarized copies.2

  • People who cannot use Social Security’s online services fill in the paper Form SS-5 and show the required documents.15
Passport
  • USAGov says to report a name change to the U.S. Department of State as soon as possible to get an updated passport.16
  • Form DS-5504 covers a name change by marriage when the passport was issued less than one year ago and the name changed within that year.11

  • Renewing with Form DS-82 requires sending the most recent passport, issued when the applicant was at least 16 and less than 15 years ago.17
  • An applicant who cannot document the name change with a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order must apply on Form DS-11 instead.17
  • Form DS-11 is filed in person at a passport acceptance facility, at a passport agency by appointment, or at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad.18
Voter registration
  • A voter registration can be updated online through vote.gov or by mail with the National Mail Voter Registration Form.16
Agencies
  • USAGov advises telling Social Security early because other agencies learn of name changes through the SSA.16
  • Every name on a federal tax return must match Social Security records.16

Questions about Texas

Where do you get a certified copy of a Texas marriage license?

In Texas the certified copy comes from the county clerk in the county where the marriage license was issued, not from the state. Texas DSHS sends people with that request back to the county.

The $20 verification letter that DSHS sells only confirms that a marriage was recorded. It is not certified, so it cannot stand in for the license when an agency asks for a certified copy.3,5

How much is a certified copy of a Texas marriage license?

It depends on the county that issued the license. Travis County charges $6.00, Harris County $5.00 plus $1.00 per page, Bexar County $8 a copy, Dallas County $10.00 and Tarrant County $21 for the first copy and $11 for each extra one.

Social Security and the passport office each ask for a certified copy, so Bexar County suggests buying two when you change your name. Order them from the clerk in the county where you bought the license, even if you live somewhere else now.6–10

How much does a name change after marriage cost in Texas?

About $16 to $36 in agency fees before the passport. Social Security charges nothing for the new card. A certified copy of the marriage license costs $6 in Travis County and up to $21 in Tarrant County, and the duplicate driver license is $10 under state law, plus up to $5 at a county or city office.

The passport is free with Form DS-5504 if it was issued less than a year ago; otherwise a DS-82 renewal of a passport book costs $130. The SimplePaperwork kit fills in the federal forms and lists each step; it does not replace any of these fees.1,8,10–12

How long do you have to update a Texas driver license after marriage?

Thirty days. Section 521.054 of the Texas Transportation Code covers anyone who “changes the person’s name by marriage or otherwise” and sets the clock from the date the change takes effect.

The notice must give the old name, the new name and the license number. A late notice can still be cured: a court may dismiss the charge if it is fixed within 20 working days, with a fee of up to $20.1

How much does the new Texas license cost?

A name change is handled as a duplicate license, and Section 521.424 sets that fee at $10. A county or city office that offers license services under an agreement with the state may add up to $5 per transaction.1

How do you update your name on your Texas voter registration?

Use the Secretary of State’s free online service with your driver license or ID, your Social Security number and your VUID, the number printed on your voter card. The new certificate comes by mail within 30 days.

The voter roll and the license are separate records: updating one never updates the other.13

What the Texas kit does, and what it doesn’t

  • Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
  • The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
  • The Texas checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
  • Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.

The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a certified copy of a marriage license cost in Harris, Dallas or Tarrant County?

Harris County charges a $5.00 certification fee plus $1.00 per page, Dallas County $10.00 and Tarrant County $21 for the first copy and $11 for each additional one. Bexar County charges $8 a copy and Travis County $6.00.6–10

Can a Texas marriage verification letter replace the certified marriage license?

No. Texas DSHS says its verification letters are not certified and are not meant to prove a marriage. Order the certified copy from the county clerk that issued your license.3

What happens if you miss the 30-day deadline in Texas?

Missing it is a violation of Section 521.054, but a court may dismiss the charge if the driver remedies it within 20 working days of the offense and pays a reimbursement fee of no more than $20.1

Does updating your Texas voter registration change your driver license?

No. The Secretary of State’s voter service states that it does not change the name or address on a driver license; the license is updated separately with the DPS.13

Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?

No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.4,15

Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?

Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.11

Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?

No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.2
