Questions about Minnesota
Where do you get a certified Minnesota marriage certificate?
From the county office that issued your marriage license. The Minnesota Department of Health keeps no marriage records, and its own table says the county sets the price, so it varies.
To find the record first, search the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS), which covers most marriages in the state.5
How soon must you update a Minnesota license after marriage?
Within 30 days. Section 171.11 of the Minnesota Statutes says a driver who changes a name “by marriage or otherwise” must apply for a duplicate license in that time and pay the fee; the application shows both the former and the new name.1
How much does a duplicate Minnesota license cost?
The statutory fee for a duplicate license, REAL ID or not, is $12.75, and the state collects a $2.25 technology surcharge with it. A driver license agent may add its own filing fee.2
What does Driver and Vehicle Services need for a name change?
Start with Social Security and wait until the SSA confirms the change, online or with the new card in the mail. DVS compares your full legal name, suffixes and two-part names included, with the Social Security card and will not update the license if they differ.
Then go to any office that handles license or ID renewals with your current card and a certified marriage certificate (a marriage license with a certified recorded marriage date also works). Expect a new photo, and change the name on your vehicle titles too.3
How do you update a Minnesota voter registration with a new name?
Re-register. Online you need a Minnesota driver license or ID number, or the last four digits of your Social Security number, and an email address. Advance registration closes 21 days before Election Day, at 11:59 p.m. online and 5 p.m. on paper.
Miss that cutoff and you can still register in person when you vote, or with an absentee ballot.7,8
What the Minnesota kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Minnesota checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Minnesota Department of Health send you a marriage certificate?
No. MDH does not record marriages. The certified copy comes from the county office that issued the marriage license, at a price that varies by county.5
What if your Social Security card has a suffix your Minnesota license lacks?
Driver and Vehicle Services requires the full legal name, including suffixes and two-part names, to match the Social Security card; if it does not, the license cannot be updated.3
Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?
No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.6,10
Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?
Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.12
Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?
No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.4
