Questions about South Carolina
Where do you order a South Carolina marriage certificate?
It depends on the date. The Department of Public Health holds marriages from July 1950 through December 2023; for anything newer, go to the probate court that issued the license, where DPH prices do not apply.
From DPH, a mailed request costs $12 with one certified copy included, $3 for each extra copy, and takes about four weeks; include a photocopy of a photo ID or it is rejected. Online orders through VitalChek cost a $17 search fee plus $12.85, and walk-in requests are suspended for now.5
How long do you have to report a married name to the SCDMV?
Ten days. Section 56-1-230 of the South Carolina Code covers a name “changed by marriage or otherwise” and requires written notice to the Department of Motor Vehicles with the old and new names.
Plan the visit around Social Security: the SCDMV wants the change made there at least 48 hours before you arrive.1,2
What do you bring to an SCDMV branch for a married name?
Forms 4057 (name and/or address change) and 447-NC (the license application), plus your marriage license. State law accepts a license signed by the officiant and both spouses.
You get one chance per marriage: the license can change a middle or last name, never a first name, and a different version of the married name later requires a court order. The change also updates your vehicle records, and new registration cards come by mail.1,2
How much does a South Carolina license in a married name cost?
Ten dollars, the amount the SCDMV fee table lists for a duplicate or modified license. Choosing a REAL ID for the first time instead costs $25, because it is treated as a renewal.2,3
How do you update a South Carolina voter registration with a new name?
Update the DMV record first. After that, the Election Commission accepts the change online if you hold a South Carolina license or DMV ID card.
The paper change form has its own name-change line and can be mailed, faxed or emailed to your county board of voter registration, or filled out at the county office. It also lets you ask for a duplicate voter registration certificate.7,8
What the South Carolina kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The South Carolina checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.
Frequently asked questions
Can you go to the SCDMV the same day you update Social Security?
No. The SCDMV says the name must be changed with the Social Security Administration at least 48 hours before the branch visit.2
Can you change your married name twice at the SCDMV?
Not with the marriage license alone. The SCDMV allows one name change per marriage, and state law limits a marriage license to one use per marriage; a different version of the name later needs a court order.1,2
Does South Carolina DPH have a 2026 marriage on file?
No. The Department of Public Health lists marriages from July 1950 through December 2023; newer records come from the probate court that issued the license.5
Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?
No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.6,10
Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?
Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.12
Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?
No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.4
