Questions about District of Columbia
Where do you get a certified copy of a DC marriage record?
From the DC Superior Court, not from a health department. The court’s Marriage Bureau both issues the license and certifies copies, and it holds District marriage records going back to 1811.
The bureau is in Room JM-690 of the Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Avenue NW, and the court gives [email protected] as the contact for certified copies of marriage licenses.5
How do you put a married name on a DC driver license?
Social Security comes first: DC DMV will only reissue the card once your Social Security record carries the new name. Then go to a DMV service center with your current DC license, permit or ID and a certified marriage certificate.
Bring originals; photocopies and scans are refused. If your card has no REAL ID star in the upper right corner, you will also need original documents for identity, Social Security number and District residency.1,2
What does the new DC license cost?
The reissued card is a duplicate, listed at $20 on the DMV fee table. Paying by debit or credit card adds a 2.5% service fee, a charge in place since December 15, 2025.2,3
How do you update a DC voter registration with a new name?
Use the Board of Elections’ online form, or print its application, sign it and send it by mail, fax or as a photo by email. Updates sent online or by mail have to arrive by the 21st day before an election to count for it.
Missed that cutoff? Same-day registration during early voting and on Election Day is still open with a proof of residence that shows your name and District address.7,8

The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The District of Columbia checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
