Questions about Oregon
How do you order an Oregon marriage certificate?
From the Oregon Health Authority, which treats marriage records as restricted for 50 years and asks every requester to prove eligibility. A spouse whose ID shows a name on the record needs nothing more.
The first certificate costs $25 by mail or drop box, $28 at an in-person appointment and $47.50 online through VitalChek, whose default UPS shipping adds $20. Extra copies are $25 each.4,6
Why must Social Security come before Oregon DMV?
Oregon DMV checks every Social Security number with the SSA, and its name-change page tells customers to change their name there first.
For a REAL ID, the name on the card must match the SSA record exactly. A standard card can carry a name that differs from SSA files when you bring proof of it, but updating Social Security first avoids a mismatch.1
What does Oregon charge to put a married name on a license?
A name change is issued as a replacement: $30.00 for a standard Class C license and $60 for a REAL ID. Book an appointment or wait for standby service, and bring the marriage certificate as an original or a copy certified by the issuing agency.
You leave with an interim card; the permanent one is mailed, usually within five to ten days. Your vehicle title keeps the old name until you change it separately.1–3
Can you change your name on an Oregon voter record online?
No. Oregon’s online system covers other updates, but a name change needs a new paper registration card, completed through the updates section at the bottom and returned to your county elections office.
Cards are available at post offices, libraries and county elections offices, or by mail on request. Updates are accepted until 8 p.m. on Election Day, though a late one may mean picking up your ballot at the county office.8
What the Oregon kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Oregon checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change your name on an Oregon REAL ID before updating Social Security?
No. Oregon DMV verifies the legal name and Social Security number with the SSA for a REAL ID, and the name on the card must match what the SSA has on file.1
Who can order an Oregon marriage certificate?
Oregon restricts marriage records for 50 years, so only eligible people may order them. A spouse named on the record qualifies; if the name on the ID does not match the record, OHA asks for legal name-change documents.6
Does changing your Oregon license also change your vehicle title?
No. Oregon DMV says the new name on your license does not automatically change existing vehicle documents such as the title.1
Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?
No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.7,10
Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?
Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.12
Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?
No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.5
