Questions about Georgia
Where do you get a certified copy of a Georgia marriage certificate?
For most newlyweds, at the probate court in the county that issued the marriage license. The State Office of Vital Records holds marriage applications and certificates only from June 1952 through August 1996, at $10 for a certificate plus $5 per extra copy.
If you asked for the name change on your marriage license application, Georgia treats the certificate from the probate court as your legal name change document, and no Superior Court petition is needed.6,7,9
How long do you have to update a Georgia driver’s license after marriage?
Sixty days from the name change, according to the Department of Driver Services, and the update happens in person at a DDS Customer Service Center rather than online.
Bring a certified copy of the marriage license application if you married in Georgia, or else the marriage license, a state-issued certificate or a court order. A hyphenated surname needs the certified application that shows it, for Georgia marriages on or after November 1, 1982.1,2
Does it cost anything to change your name on a Georgia license?
Not the first time in a license term: DDS allows one free name or address change per term, and the replacement card runs to the end of that term. A further change in the same term may require a renewal and its fees.
The temporary paper license handed out at the center is not accepted by the TSA for flights, so plan air travel around the wait for the permanent card.2–4
How do you update a Georgia voter registration with a married name?
File a new registration application; the county registrar finds your existing record and updates it. Filing online takes a valid Georgia driver’s license or DDS ID card with your signature on file at DDS, and a printable form can be mailed instead.
The voter application can also begin at DDS during your license visit, since DDS forwards it to the Secretary of State. To vote in a given election, you must be registered at least 30 days before it.1,10,11
