Questions about Connecticut
Where do you order a certified Connecticut marriage certificate?
From the vital records office of the town where you married, the town where either of you lived at the time, or the State Vital Records Office in Hartford. Each copy is $20.00 at the state or at a town.
The state office takes postal money orders payable to the Treasurer, State of CT, never personal checks. For a wedding less than four months old, the state form says to ask the town of the marriage instead.2,4
How much does it cost to change your name on a Connecticut license?
$30 for the updated driver license or non-driver ID. DMV express offices at AAA and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union branches may add up to $8 per transaction.1
What happens at a Connecticut DMV name change appointment?
Book an appointment at a hub or express office only after Social Security has processed your name, which the DMV says can take up to 48 hours. Bring Form E-78, your current card and the original certified marriage certificate; religious certificates and photocopies are turned away.
You hand in the old card and leave with a Temporary Paper Card. If your car registration also needs the new name, fill out Form B-301 and handle both at the same visit.1
How do you update your name on a Connecticut voter registration?
Say yes to the voter update offered at your DMV visit, or mail the Secretary of the State form to your local registrar of voters. Either way the change counts only once the registrar approves it, and a confirmation arrives in about three weeks.
Close to an election, every town also registers voters on the spot during early voting and on Election Day.6,7

The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Connecticut checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
