Questions about Kansas

What does a certified Kansas marriage certificate cost?

Twenty dollars a copy. K.A.R. 28-17-6 sets $20 for the first certified copy of a marriage certificate and the same for each extra copy of that record ordered at once; the price went up from $15 on July 1, 2022.

The Office of Vital Statistics in the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka takes walk-in orders from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, with a government-issued photo ID, and accepts cash, check, money order or card.5,7

How soon must you update a Kansas driver license after marriage?

K.S.A. 8-248 gives a licensee whose name changes “by marriage or otherwise” 10 days to notify the Division of Vehicles in writing, with the old and new names and the license number.

Update Social Security first: the Division of Vehicles wants the new name on that record at least 24 hours before it changes your credential.1,2

How much does a Kansas license with a new name cost?

The Division of Vehicles lists $16.00 for a name change on a license and $12.00 on an ID card. K.S.A. 8-246, the replacement statute, names an $8 fee; the agency’s page does not break down the difference.

Bring your current credential, proof of the name change and proof of your residential address. A duplicate Kansas marriage license is not accepted as the proof.2,3

How do you change your name on a Kansas voter registration?

Kansas treats it as a new registration: fill out a new form, online if you hold a valid Kansas driver license or non-driver ID, or on paper. Staff at the driver license office will also offer to update it when your new card is issued.

The books close 21 days before each election, so anything received later is processed after that election. Kansas also asks for photo ID at the polls.2,8,9

What the Kansas kit does, and what it doesn’t

  • Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
  • The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
  • The Kansas checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
  • Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
