Questions about Colorado
Where do you get a certified Colorado marriage certificate?
From the county clerk and recorder’s office that holds the marriage license, which is where the Colorado health department sends people for marriage records. Couples who solemnized their own marriage returned the license to that office themselves.
The state’s Office of the State Registrar only issues verifications of registered ceremonial marriages, by mail with ID and proof of eligibility. Its Denver office sees the public by appointment only.4,6,7
How long do you have to change your name on a Colorado license after marriage?
Thirty days. The DMV treats the change as a renewal of your credential with the new name, booked as a Driver License Renewal appointment; its fee table lists $34.00 for a REAL ID renewal.
Social Security must have the new name first. The DMV says that update takes about 24 to 48 hours, and the document you bring has to match the name on your Social Security card.1,2
Which marriage documents does the Colorado DMV accept?
A certified marriage certificate from a city, county, state, U.S. territory or foreign country, translated into English if needed. Church documents are refused, and a notarized photocopy is not a certified copy: it needs a government seal or stamp.
The license office does not touch your vehicle records. Change the name on a title or registration at your county motor vehicle office.1
How do you update your name on a Colorado voter registration?
GoVoteColorado’s “Change my name” link opens the state registration form, which has a box for updating your legal name and a line for the previous one. Send it to your county clerk and recorder by mail, email or in person.
To get a mail ballot, file by the 8th day before Election Day; after that, voter service and polling centers register voters in person through Election Day. A DMV office also takes voter updates when you change your license.8–10
What the Colorado kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Colorado checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
