Questions about Massachusetts
Where do you get a certified copy of a Massachusetts marriage certificate?
The statewide source is the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics at 150 Mount Vernon Street in Dorchester. The counter charges $20 a copy and usually hands it over the same day; a standard mail order is $32; VitalChek, online or by phone, is $54 for the first copy and $42 for each additional one.
Every request needs a photo ID, and the Registry prefers a driver license, even an expired one. The Registry holds records from 1936 onward; marriages from 1931 to 1935 now sit at the State Archives, and weddings held in other states are never on file in Massachusetts.3,5,7,8
When do you pick your married name in Massachusetts?
Before the wedding. The couple files a Notice of Intention of Marriage in person with a city or town clerk, and the form asks for the name each person will use afterward. After the ceremony, the state guide says, the name changes automatically to the one listed on the marriage certificate.
Chapter 46, Section 1D allows any surname: either spouse’s current or birth surname, a return to a birth surname, or a hyphenated combination.3,9,10
How long do you have to tell the Massachusetts RMV about a new name?
Thirty days. Chapter 90, Section 26A makes license and permit holders report a change of name in writing to the Registrar within 30 days after the change, and the same duty applies to anyone with a vehicle or trailer registered in their name.
Skipping the report has a stated consequence: the statute lets the Registrar revoke or suspend the license, permit or registration of a driver who does not report.1
How does a name change work at a Massachusetts RMV Service Center?
There is no online route for a name: myRMV covers address and organ donor updates only. Schedule an appointment, bring the completed license and ID application, and expect a new photo, a new signature and a $25 amendment fee.
The paperwork depends on the card. A REAL ID needs proof of the change, such as the certified marriage certificate, whenever the new name differs from your lawful presence document. A standard license can be changed with no documentation, provided there is no attempt to defraud.2
How do you update a Massachusetts voter registration after marriage?
With an RMV signature on file, use the online voter registration system, which accepts name updates; otherwise mail a signed paper form to your local election office. Either way, the cutoff is 10 days before an election or town meeting.
If you do nothing, Chapter 51, Section 2 keeps you on the rolls under your former name until June 1 of the next year. Giving the registrars notice of the new name in person before registration closes corrects the current register sooner.10,11
What the Massachusetts kit does, and what it doesn’t
- Form SS-5 filled in from your answersYou print it, sign it and bring it to Social Security with your documents. The form itself is free on ssa.gov.
- The passport application for your case, filled inPicked from your answers about your current passport; the State Department’s fees are paid to the State Department. The application also needs a recent color photo, which the kit doesn’t include: U.S. passport photo rules, and a photo from a selfie.
- The Massachusetts checklistThe steps above in order, with the deadline, the fee and the official page for each one.
- Notification lettersFor your bank, employer, insurer and other accounts, with your old and new names.
The kit does not file anything for you and is not legal advice. Government fees, like the license fee and the county copy of your marriage record, are paid directly to each office.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a marriage certificate to change the name on a standard Massachusetts license?
No. The RMV changes the name on a standard license or ID with no documentation as long as there is no attempt to defraud. A REAL ID is different: if the new name does not match your lawful presence document, bring the marriage certificate.2
Can you change your name on a Massachusetts license online?
No. Online, myRMV handles address and organ donor changes. A name change is finished at an RMV Service Center appointment, where the new photo and signature are taken.2
What happens if you skip the 30-day report to the Massachusetts RMV?
Section 26A of Chapter 90 lets the Registrar of Motor Vehicles revoke or suspend the license, learner’s permit or vehicle registration of anyone who fails to report a change of name in writing within 30 days.1
Which surname can you take when you marry in Massachusetts?
Any surname. Chapter 46, Section 1D lets each spouse adopt the other’s surname, keep or return to a birth surname, choose another surname, or hyphenate. Write the choice on the Notice of Intention of Marriage before the wedding.9,10
Does it cost anything to change your name with Social Security?
No. Social Security mails the card with the new name at no charge. The paper application, Form SS-5, is published by Social Security itself.6,13
Is there a fee to change the name on a new passport?
Not when the passport is less than a year old and the name changed within that year: Form DS-5504 has no fee unless you ask for expedited service or 1–2 day delivery.15
Can you bring a photocopy of your marriage certificate to Social Security?
No. Social Security accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and it refuses photocopies and notarized copies.4
